Looking Ahead: Our 3.5 MW Expansion Plan

October 23, 2024

More on Our 3.5 MW Expansion Plan

In September, Data Facilities proudly announced a 3.5 MW infrastructure expansion at our Netherlands-based data center. Today, we take a closer look at the progress we've made since then, offering insight into the advancements shaping this ambitious project. This expansion is not just about meeting current demand - it's a forward-looking initiative designed to future-proof our services in a market where power and capacity are increasingly critical.

Data Facilities: Since 2012

Since 2012, Data Facilities has been at the forefront of innovation in colocation services. In 2023, our parent company, Ellada Holdings, acquired Data Facilities with a vision for growth at our The Hague location. This expansion began with the acquisition of the property in September 2024, setting the stage for our ambitious infrastructure development plans.

A Closer Look at the 3.5 MW Enhancement

Our 3.5 MW expansion will be rolled out in modular phases over the next 24 months, with a strong focus on improving power efficiency and sustainability. This phased approach allows us to scale operations effectively while upholding the highest standards of service and infrastructure resilience. The expansion will boost our rack capacity from 165 to potentially 275 server racks, supporting power densities of up to 10kW per rack. This increased capability is essential for accommodating modern computing workloads and mission-critical applications across a variety of industries.

Enhanced Resilience and Redundancy with 2N+1 Infrastructure Upgrade

This expansion marks a significant upgrade from our current N+1 design to a more robust 2N+1 architecture. With several isolated pods, each capable of operating independently or in parallel, we are enhancing both redundancy and operational flexibility. This design ensures that even during maintenance or unexpected events, the infrastructure remains fully operational, providing unmatched reliability and resilience for our colocation services. These improvements not only increase capacity but also ensure maximum uptime and performance for our customers.

Enhancing Connectivity and Network Capabilities

A significant aspect of our expansion is the enhancement of our connectivity and network capabilities. We are investing heavily in our data center’s network presence, adding additional diverse points of entry, welcoming new carriers and upgrading our in-house optical transport network which interconnects with 7 other regional data centers in the Rotterdam and Amsterdam metro areas with high-speed connections of up to 400Gbps. Our network upgrades will facilitate ultra-high-speed connections of up to 400 Gbps between key data centers within the Amsterdam and Rotterdam regions, enhancing our ability to serve as a major connectivity hub.

Looking Ahead: Building for the Future

As we advance with our expansion, we’re excited about the opportunities it will create. By the end of Q1 2025, we will be ready to welcome new customers, while continuing to strengthen our role within the digital infrastructure ecosystem. This expansion will enhance our ability to support the evolving needs of businesses, not only in the Netherlands but across Europe, driving forward our commitment to providing reliable, future-ready solutions.
